Net
List Contest Update
The deadline for our contest has been extended
to June 1, 2009.
Our thanks go to Jim, VE2VE, VP Technical and Administrative Services, RAC for so
promptly posting the changes. Now, we
just need our own members to check the bands.
Here’s
how:
Go
to the RAC web site at www.rac.ca/opsinfo/nets.htm. Click on the CLARA Net List. Then, select Canadian Nets you should
expect to hear. Listen on the
appropriate band and submit the information to me, Ann VE3HAI at barcann@gmail.com. Please confirm as many details as possible,
but even partial information is helpful. Just to know the particular Net is
still on the air is very helpful.
The
new deadline for submissions is June 1, 2009.
The
winner will be announced in the CLARION.
Please help us keep the list current.
A little effort could win you a prize.
YL International 2012 Australia - May 4-7th 2012 (actual dates to be confirmed)
Australia invites all YLs and
their OMs to join us for the 2012 YL International Meet on 4th to 7th
of May 2012 in Adelaide.
Plans are progressing but there is not a lot definite.
Our current thinking is that the main part of the meet will be in the Glenelg
area which is close to the airport and beach, has a variety of levels of
accommodation to suit all budgets very close together and is only a 20 minute
tram ride from the city of Adelaide. Have a look at this website for more
information www.glenelgsa.com.au.
Some
of the potential activities are visits to Port Adelaide, Barossa Valley, a wild
life park or Hahndorf.
Port
Adelaide is rich in diversity of places to see and do, including markets,
museums and a short cruise on the river where the dolphins might come out to
play.
The
Barossa Valley is a wine growing area. I have been looking at a progressive
lunch at several wineries and a visit to the whispering wall.
As
most wildlife here are nocturnal and very shy, the only way to see them is at
one of our great wildlife parks. Hahndorf is a small village in the Adelaide
Hills with a strong German flavour which has many little shops and is always an
interesting place to visit.
An
optional tour at the end of the meet will be a trip on the Ghan Railway to
Alice Springs and on to Darwin. Never heard of the Ghan? – have a look at this
website: http://www.gsr.com.au.
A
5-night stop in Alice Springs will give you the chance to go out to Uluru, once
known as Ayers Rock, Kata Tjuta, otherwise known as the Olgas
and Kings Canyon. Then back on the train to Darwin with a stop at Katherine
Gorge. At least one day of sightseeing in Darwin will be organised. This trip
will take about a week to ten days.
Further
options for those who want to make the most of their long flights to Australia
will be offered for you to book yourself.
I
have set up a website which is definitely "under construction" at
this time but I will put all details up there as they are finalised.
The
address is: http://ylinternational2012.110mb.com
If
you would like any specific information or want to be added to the list of
potential attendees and kept up to date with the latest details email me at vk5tmc@bigpond.com.
I
look forward to seeing many of you at our 2012 YL International.

YLRL New Award Certificate for 2009
(contact Helen
Archibald va1yl@ns.sympatico.ca for
further information)
Summary
All year - to get YLs chatting.
Any band including VHF and Echolink, but not during nets.
Only available to YLs.
Send only log, not QSLs.
The Log must list the following: a. CALLSIGN of the YL
worked b. NAME of YL (first name is fine), c. DATE, TIME, FREQUENCY/BAND, and
d. some other "TIDBIT" of information about the YL.
Needed are contacts with 26 YL's with callsigns that have
one of the 26 letters of the English alphabet in the callsign.
The YL FRIENDSHIP AWARD
To help promote YLRL and the YLRL Award Certificates, and
of course to get more YL’s on the air chatting (instead of just exchanging
signal reports), we are going to have an annual Award Certificate. This annual
Award will change each year, so watch for it at the beginning of every year.
The award will be for contacts made only during the year it is advertised. The
2009 award will be the YL FRIENDSHIP AWARD. Since the annual award certificate
will have to be completed in one year, the rules are a little simpler. Here are
the 2009 Award rules …
2009 YL FRIENDSHIP AWARD RULES:
1. Contacts must be made in the calendar year of 2009
between January 1, and December 31, 2009.
2.
All contacts must be made with YL's only on any band
(HF, VHF, UHF and including the use
of repeaters Echolink, and IRLP, but not
during Nets) and any mode (SSB, PSK31,
RTTY, CW, etc.). [Note, you can use a net
to ask a YL to stay around after the net for a
contact, or to move to a
different frequency to make the contact, but we
don’t want to disrupt nets to
chat long enough to get contacts for this award as
the Net Control may not like
the disruption of regular net activities.]
3. The award is only available to
YL's. You do not have to be a YLRL member to receive this award.
4. Send in only a log of contacts on the form, or a
similar sheet of paper computer produced or hand drawn.
5. The Log must list the following:
a. CALLSIGN of the YL worked
b. NAME of YL (first name is fine),
c. DATE, TIME, FREQUENCY/BAND, and
d. some other "TIDBIT" of information about the
YL. "Tidbits" can
include anything particular to the YL, such as
husband's name, pet's
name and type, a hobby the YL enjoys, how many
children/grandchildren the YL has, where the YL works,
anything, etc.
6. Needed are contacts with 26 YL's with callsigns that
have one of the
26 letters of the English alphabet in the callsign. You
will need a different YL for each letter of the English alphabet. For example
...
N8ST can be used for the letter "N",
"S", or "T", but only for one letter (not all). List your
log alphabetically by the alphabet letters used
.

Heart & Stroke Foundation Bike Ride
On April 29th,
2008 the Heart & Stroke Foundation held a sponsored 10 km bike ride in
Smiths Falls, Ontario. A. Germain Purcell (Gerry), VE3MHP, who is blind
and also a CLARA member, was one of the riders on the big bike.
Gerry raised $177.00 from sponsors
for the event. The day was bitterly cold and the riders endured sleet
and snow. Gerry, who is the lady directly behind the bike controller in
the photo, came prepared wearing gloves, a green coat with fur collar
and a wine colored touque. Congratulations to Gerry for braving the
elements for such a worthy cause.

BC CLARA Friendship 2M Net Luncheon
On
Saturday, April 19th, 2008 a luncheon was held for the ladies
participating in the weekly Pacific Coast CLARA 2M Net. It was well
attended by 5 YL's and their OM's. It was a great opportunity to get
together over a wonderful vegetarian chinese meal. They also celebrated
each other's birthdays and exchanged gifts.
